Meet The Team: Interview with Clemens Heistracher

Welcome on board to Clemens

Happy reading!

What prompted you to apply for this job? What about this position interested you the most?

What prompted me to apply is that craftworks is the best player in bringing customized AI solutions to the industry in Austria.  Based on my research experience developing customized AI solutions, joining the craftworks team was my logical next step.

What were you doing before craftworks?

Before craftworks, I was a Data Scientist and Project Manager at the Austrian Institute for Technology. I was responsible for customer and research projects in industrial data science.

What about craftworks do you like the most so far?

The combination of team spirit, social life and professionalism.

What advice would you give someone who’s just starting out in your field?

Try many things, but ignore unmaintained repos.

Could you please tell us more about your educational career?

I have a background in technical physics from University of Technology in Vienna but soon realised that in the lab many things go wrong that are not your fault, when working with computers most of the time it's you, which is something you can work with. That is why I decided to focus on computational physics and ended up with machine learning.

How do you prefer to start your day?

I prefer to start my day with a good coffee.

How do you go about continuing to develop your professional skills and knowledge?

On the one hand, the projects or the challenges we face in our work require us to use new technologies and to stay up to date. On the other hand, there is always something you can learn, something new, some things you missed. Therefore, I am up to date by reading blogs and scientific papers and joining meet ups.

Could you tell us more about yourself? For example: what are your hobbies and where do you like to spend your time most?

In the winter, I prefer to spend my days in the mountains, where I go ski mountaineering and enjoy the quiet nature and sound. I enjoy climbing, restoring old road bikes, and taking them out in the warmer periods.

Which book would you recommend reading and why?

Two books: "Deep Work" by Cal Newport because it helps you reflect on what your priorities are. For leisure, I enjoy the series from Robert Galbraith, aka J.K. Rowling, because she writes the perfect thriller.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

sociable, helpful, optimistic

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important to you?

Currently I'm learning how to use the craftworks internal food ordering system. 🙂

3 short questions:

Office or remote?

Office.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee.

Tell me one place you always wanted to travel to?

La Reunion.

Thank you, Clemens!
