This week we’re interviewing Data Engineer Bernhard Redl. Bernhard joined our team at the beginning of this year as an expert for the big data infrastructure for our customers. We hope you’ll enjoy! 🙂
Could you just start by explaining how you landed at craftworks?
I’ve known Lukas (Lukas Haselsteiner, our software engineer) for many years now, and so I was very interested in the machine learning sector of the company he was working for. As I’m fascinated by the possibilities in this field, I was very eager to apply to join the growing team. Things moved really quickly then – I was still in Spain for an internship as I was doing my skype interview!
What did you do before craftworks?
Whilst studying I was working as a tutor in the security field at University for some years. I was also in charge of leading the development of a software running the ‘Capture the Flag’ contests for the students of our lectures. As resources at University should be used deliberately, I learned how to use them efficiently.
Could you describe craftworks in 3 words?
Young, always delivering, innovative
What about your work do you like the most?
The overall company spirit and my fellow colleagues – working with good people makes life a lot better and allows things to get done much faster. Also, having a very flat organizational structure makes it a lot easier to reach decisions quickly.
How do you go about continuing to develop your professional skills and knowledge?
Alongside retrieving knowledge from colleagues working in different fields, I refer to resources like books and papers to develop my skills. Together with some colleagues we’re currently also planning to attend some lectures at university to deepen our knowledge.
What are you reading at present?
Right now I’m reading: “A Brief Introduction to Machine Learning for Engineers” (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1709.02840.pdf)
What does your typical day at craftworks look like?
I start the day by greeting all my colleagues with a fist bump. Every two weeks we enjoy breakfast together in the company. As I’m not a coffee person, I start with a tea or a club mate. A good time for exchanging live experiences and ideas about projects is our communal lunch, which we all enjoy together.
